6 Ways to Attract, Hire and Retain Gen Z Employees

Gen Z workers, born from 1997 through 2012, will make up almost 30% of the global workforce by 2025. To successfully attract, hire, and retain this new generation of employees, companies need to demonstrate they are inclusive, ethical, support wellness, and are committed to making a positive social and environmental impact.

Gen Z graduates are entering the workforce at a time when the overall workforce is shrinking, and they’re bringing with them new expectations that are reshaping the working world.

Here are 6 Gen Z expectations for the workplace

1. Diversity, equity and inclusion is a must –

Gen Z is the most ethnically and racially diverse generation in history and the group with the most LGBTQ individuals. Unsurprisingly, Gen Z prioritizes workplace diversity more than previous generations. A recent study found that 87% of Gen Zers think workplace DEI strategies are crucial.

2. Flexibility to match their lives –

Many Gen Zers attended their final college semesters virtually and have worked remotely the past two years. They’ve grown accustomed to working remotely and prefer flexible work schedules that include early mornings or evenings to maximize their personal and professional productivity. When considering jobs, flexible work hours and a flexible work environment are more important to Gen Z than salary and benefits.

3. Feeling healthy and happy –

An organization that cares about employees’ well-being” is #1 on the Gen Z workplace want list. Over 90% of Gen Z graduates believe companies should offer mental health or emotional health benefits and more than a third (34%) believe a company’s health and wellness benefits are just as important a factor for them as the availability of a 401(k).

4. Meaningful work to be good global citizens –

Gen Zers want to work for a company that stands for a purpose beyond simply making a profit. They want to feel a sense of belonging and that their work is making a positive societal or environmental impact. More than half of employees would leave an employer for another organization that is more aligned with their environmental, social and governance (ESG) values.

5. Transparency and ethical values –

Gen Z wants to work for bosses that are fair and ethical. More than four in ten Gen Zers say their choice of potential employers is based on the organization’s values and ethics. They are more likely to leave an employer if they feel it’s concealing poor business practices.

6. Opportunities for continued learning –

Gen Z prioritizes employers who create a positive work culture and invest in their success. Over 90% of employees stay with a company longer when it invests in learning. This includes training to foster an inclusive and respectful work environment. A shocking 86% of Gen Z workers say they have experienced discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment at work.

Companies that check these boxes are better positioned to attract new graduates hitting the job market this spring and retain current employees. Regardless of generational differences, all employees stand to benefit from actions to foster a more inclusive, supportive, healthy and responsible work culture.

Dallas Diversity 247 is Here to Help

Diversity is a critical issue for organizations. A survey by Korn/Ferry International found that more than 2 million people leave their jobs each year because of unfairness in the workplace. In addition, hiring costs that result from high turnover are a huge stumbling block to company success, not to mention the time investment that goes into screening applicants and acclimating new hires to their roles. Still, the greatest hindrance to progression lies within the heart of the issue –devaluing and excluding employees because they are different limits their contributions and ability to grow.
