Understanding Juneteenth and its Historical Context: Juneteenth is the day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of slavery, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed an order making Juneteenth a federal holiday. In the ruling, President Biden noted that Juneteenth is a day to “reflect on the deep stain of slavery of the soul of America” and celebrate our remarkable progress as a nation. General Gordon Granger, like Miss Opal Lee, played a significant role in the history of Juneteenth. On June 19, 1865, General Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, with Union troops with the announcement. The freedom announcement came two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation declared all enslaved people in Confederal states to be free. Miss Opal Lee is a civil rights activist who has advocated for Juneteenth to be recognized in the United States as a national holiday. She has been working towards this goal for over 40 years, and her efforts have helped raise awareness of Juneteenth’s significance and its importance in American history.

Her efforts have also helped inspire a new generation of activists working towards racial justice and equality for all.
